It hasn’t been very long that we noticed entry of tanzanite in the jewelry industry. However, it has already been able to make place in the hearts of millions of people throughout the world. Tanzanite was first discovered in Mererani Hills in Northern Tanzania in the year 1967. It is one of the rarest gemstones with deep blue hue. Normally, in the rough state this stone is reddish brown. In order to bring the blue color it is treated with the high temperature of 600 degree Celsius. The luster and deep blue color of tanzanite cut stone is brilliant. At present, we can see the use of this precious gem in earrings, engagement rings, wedding rings, broaches, bracelets, necklaces and tiaras.

Maintenance of the tanzanite should be done properly when it is coupled with platinum, gold or silver jewelry. The impurities and various chemicals gathered on the surface of tanzanite jewelry can easily hamper the quality of the piece. Regular cleaning can help to minimize the damage. Since, this is one of the precious gemstones, you need to be very careful while cleaning tanzanite jewelry. Here are some of the important things you need to keep in mind when cleaning your tanzanite jewelry.

Ring-Tanzanite

1. Use the Right Cleaner:
Use of any cleanser is not recommended as tanzanite is very delicate. Strong chemical such as ultra-sonic jewelry cleaners can damage the composition of the stone permanently. The best thing to do is to clean the stone with warm or distilled water with mild detergent. Strong soaps and chemical cleansers should also be avoided. However, it is also important to make sure that the stone is not exposed to sudden temperature changes such as extreme hot or extreme cold conditions as this could cause cracks in the stone.

2. Clean Gently:
Clean the stone in a small bowl with warm or distilled water very gently. Use of direct tap water should be avoided. Clean the dirt around the stone using a soft toothbrush. After you have brushed it, rinse the metal and the stone in warm water for about 5 times in order to remove every bit of detergent.

3. Storing the Gem:
Place the stone in a soft, clean and dry towel after you have completed cleaning it. Get rid of the moisture by letting it air dry for about 10 minutes. It is not advisable to make use of blow dryer to dry the stone. Once the gem is completely dried, clean the surface using a paper towel and then rub it gently to get its shine. After completing the cleaning work you will observe a lustrous and clean stone which looks completely new. If you want to retain the originality of your gemstone, then store it in the muslin or velvet base jewelry cases. Keep your jewelry away from tap water and use them only in special occasions if you don’t want an old look on your jewelry.

These are the important things you need to remember while cleaning tanzanite gem. Take proper care of your jewelry and you will be able to cherish them for your life.
