What Is the Significance of Lightsaber Colors

January 14, 2022

When Star Wars first arrived in theaters, it presented the world with a fantastical new weapon: the lightsaber. These glowing swords powered by kyber crystals are only used by those who can control the force.

But fans of the series may have noticed that there are different lightsaber colors. Do these colors have any meaning? What is the purpose of these different colors?

The short answer is yes, each color has its own meaning. Read on to learn about the different lightsaber colors in Star Wars.

Blue

Both the Jedi and the Sith are unique from other characters in the Star Wars universe because they can control the force. A blue lightsaber indicates that the character is a Jedi Guardian. These characters, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, are very skilled with a lightsaber.

Green

Green lightsabers are also used by Jedi. Unlike Jedi guardians, however, these characters tend more towards diplomacy and meditation before they draw their lightsaber. These lightsabers belong to Jedi Consulars such as Yoda or Qui-Gon Jinn.

Luke Skywalker has both a blue and a green lightsaber at different points in the series.

Yellow

In the Clone Wars animated series, temple guards wield special yellow lightsabers. These are Jedi assigned to protect the temple on Coruscant.

Anyone who has one of these weapons seems to be a background character. Therefore, they aren’t usually given names to identify them with.

Purple

Purple lightsabers are relatively new to the Star Wars franchise. Anyone who uses one of these lightsabers is strongly affected by both the Dark Side and the Light. The color represents this as purple is a combination of red and blue.

Mace Windu has a purple lightsaber and you can find another in Star Wars: Visions.

Red

Red lightsabers are much simpler to explain. They are the main lightsaber color used by Sith Lords. Anakin Skywalker switches from a blue lightsaber to a red lightsaber when he becomes Darth Vader, for example.

The color does well showing who belongs to the Dark Side.

Others

There are a few other lightsaber colors also present in the Star Wars universe. This Ahsoka Tano lightsaber replica is one such example since Ahsoka’s lightsaber turns white after she leaves the Jedi Order.

Other examples include the legendary black saber. And in Star Wars: Visions, a lightsaber is shown to be almost clear in color since its wielder hasn’t received any training yet.

What Are Your Favorite Lightsaber Colors?

Whether you’re on the Dark Side or Light Side, your favorite lightsaber colors say a lot about you. Are you a Sith who will stop at nothing to achieve your goals? Or are you a more calm and collected Jedi?

Either way, you have many amazing colors to choose from if you want to design your own lightsaber. Furthermore, now you know exactly what each color means when you do.
