August 19, 2020

Introduction: Our skin needs only a certain amount of oil to keep it moisturized. However, some people have skins that are too oily. People with oily skin usually have an acne problem, shiny complexion, pimples, and blackheads. That is why they opt for home remedies for oily skin.

Why is your skin so oily?

The sebaceous glands (oil-secreting glands) are all over the body but primarily on the face and scalp. These glands produce a matter called sebum, which lubricates the skin and prevents it from drying out. It works by cleaning the pores from dead skin cells and other dirt. More specifically, oily skin appears when glands produce an abnormal amount of oil more than the skin requires to moisturize itself.

How to know if your skin is oily and what causes it

You will notice that your skin emits a little extra shine. Oily skin tends to run in families, meaning if either of your parents has oily skin, you’re most likely to have it too.  People with oily skin have faces marked by large pores and a shiny, thicker feeling complexion. They also feel the need to wash their face more often. Hormonal changes due to puberty, menopause, pregnancy, may cause an increase in oil production in the skin. When one is under stress, the body raises the level of cortisol; it stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Additionally, the weather also influences the amount of oil produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands. An unbalanced and uncontrolled diet can also lead to bad and oily skin.
