The Dos and Donts of Shorts

July 12, 2019

Shorts are the epitome of summer fashion, rocking denim cut-offs for a cool and effortless street look. Those of us who prefer a girlier approach isn’t restricted either with plenty of loose and skort options for us to choose from. No matter what style you’re looking for, there will be shorts out there that are made specifically for you. However, there are some general fashion tips and ‘rules’ which all girls, no matter what style you choose to wear, should follow when it comes to wearing shorts. Here are the dos and donts of wearing shorts:

DO wear white

When it comes to denim shorts most people tend to pick the colour blue which is the standard option when it comes to denim. But summer is the season for light colours, pastels and light neutrals, so a pair of white shorts can be a fun take on traditional denim. Because of the colour, these shorts will pair nicely with almost any choice of shirt whether it be a solid colour or patterned.

DON’T wear head to toe prints

Prints are extremely fun, but not when your whole body is covered from head to toe in them. You’ll most likely come across this issue when wearing rompers, but because they are the length of shorts you’ll be able to get away with wearing a full patterned dress (after all it’s just a dress that has shorts for bottoms instead). However, if you’re wearing patterned shorts, don’t attempt to pair it with a patterned top, especially if they’re not the same. For some subtly patterned options check out Flannel’s range of shorts.

DO balance out your pieces

Don’t try to pair a looser top with looser shorts, you’ll end up looking like a marshmallow. Always balance out your billowy tops with straight shorts and pair your looser shorts with a body con top.

DON’T wear panty shorts (please)

The only time pants shorts are acceptable is if you play a sport and need to train or you’re heading to the gym. Otherwise, please wear normal length shorts whenever you’re out in public. Also, if the pockets of your shorts are hanging out it’s a sign that your shorts are probably too short. Pockets should always be hidden in shorts.

DO make your own shorts

If you’ve got a heap of old jeans lying around, why not cut them yourself and make your own shorts? Denim cut-offs will always be in fashion – they’re the original shorts. Be resourceful and bring new life to your old jeans, and save yourself a few bucks along the way!

DO try other lengths

Recently Bermuda shorts have come into style again, a style that we never thought would be popular again. Longer denim shorts have been paving the way with their mid-thigh to knee-length, allowing women to rock the look of shorts with the comfort of covering the upper leg if they want to. We never thought we’d like the style either, but don’t diss it until you try it.
