How to Get Rid of Frizzy & Damaged Hair

February 22, 2013

For many people, frizzy, damaged hair is the result of how they take care of their hair. In many cases, exposure to heat from hair dryers and styling tools, harsh styling products, and spending a lot of time in the hot sun is what causes the worst cases of frizzy hair.

However, other people just seem to have frizzy hair no matter what they do or what styling products they use. It just seems to be a matter of genetics for these people. Their hair is naturally dry and seems damaged, even though it isn’t.

Nobody likes having frizzy hair, whether it’s caused by bad habits or they just can’t seem to get it under control. Luckily, there are some simple, effective ways you can get rid the frizz.

Overuse of styling tools is a common cause of frizzy hair.

Try a Vinegar Rinse

You might not immediately think of vinegar when you think of remedies for frizzy hair, but believe it or not, it works. Vinegar is actually one of the best home remedies for taming frizzy hair, and you likely already have everything you need at home, making it a particularly cost-effective solution as well.

To make a vinegar hair rinse, combine one part vinegar with five parts water and stir or shake the mixture to combine the ingredients. Pour the mixture over your hair in the shower, gently massaging it into your hair and scalp like you would shampoo.

Don’t let the vinegar mixture sit too long before rinsing your hair with lukewarm water. You don’t need to shampoo right after you do this – the vinegar smell will dissipate very quickly.

Make an Egg Mask

The eggs in your refrigerator are surprisingly good for frizzy and damaged hair.

One of the most noticeable things about dry hair is that doesn’t have the luster of healthy hair. Fortunately, a simple egg mask is all you really need to remedy that – at least in the short term.

To make your own egg mask, combine one egg with about 1/4-cup room temperature water in a small mixing bowl. Whisk the mixture vigorously like you’re making scrambled eggs. You don’t want pieces of egg in the mixture – you want it to be completely smooth.

Massage the egg and water mixture into your hair and scalp in the shower just like shampoo. Put on a shower cap and leave the egg mask on your hair for about five-ten minutes to let the egg do it’s work. Then rinse it out with lukewarm water.

Use Quality Conditioner

You always want to pick a quality shampoo for washing your hair, but maybe more important than the shampoo you pick is the conditioner you use when it comes to knocking out frizz and getting damaged hair under control.

When you look for a conditioner to treat frizzy and damaged hair, you want to look for something with protein to help rebuild damaged strands, as well as amino acids to give strength to the hair follicles. Conditioners that contain soy protein and aloe like Nourish’s Silk Protein Conditioner are ideal for making frizzy hair softer and more touchable.

Consider Products Designed Specifically for Frizzy Hair

Vinegar rinses, egg masks and quality conditioners designed for frizzy, damaged hair should become an important part of your hair care regimen, but what do you do on those days when you just can’t seem to tame your hair?

Try adding a product to your arsenal designed specifically for controlling frizz like Bumble and Bumble’s defrizz, which can be used before, during or after your style you hair. That means you can even keep a little with you in a travel-size bottle for when you really need it.
