How to Celebrate in Sydney: The Best Ways to Spend your Public Holidays

July 3, 2020

Ahh, public holidays – those precious couple of days a year where we get to press pause on our regular grinds and kick back, enjoying all that this beautiful city has to offer. If, like so many of us, you’ve found yourself fumbling for some last minute plans on the morning of each public holiday, it’s time you got organised and started making the most out of your free time! Here are a few ideas to get you inspired for the next public holiday creeping up on your calendar…

New Year’s Day

Although you might feel more exhausted than adventurous, New Year’s day is actually such a lovely opportunity to get out there and enjoy a summer’s morning out and about in Sydney. Take it easy and set up a picnic at one of the city’s leafy beach locations. Try heading to iconic spots such as Manly or Bondi for some sociable action or keep it chill and opt for local gems like Clontarf, Watson’s Bay and Freshwater beach. Pack plenty of water, snacks and suncream for an awesome start to the new year that’s easy on the head.

Australia Day

There’s always so much going on during Australia Day celebrations, so why not hop onto the water for a fun and memorable way of getting in amongst it all. Book yourself a spot on one of the city’s coveted Australia Day cruises on the harbour to bask in the beauty of one of the world’s most iconic spots! Floating past the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Kirribilli with the electric atmosphere of the air show and ferry race going on around you will give you an experience to remember forever. Hop off and grab a drink at the Opera Bar for a full day of celebration.

Easter

Easter weekend is packed full of family friendly fun all around the city, but if you really want to set up some adventure for yourself and the kids, then you should head to Sydney’s Botanical Gardens. The Big Easter Egg Hunt will see the little ones busy whilst you enjoy the autumn sun with your fellow adults. There’s all kinds of events dotted around this city institution, plus it’s a great way to get some light exercise in before cracking into all of that delicious chocolate.

Anzac Day

Head to your local dawn ceremony to pay your respects this coming Anzac day, there are so many different options out there but if you want to head to the main event then you can always flock to Martin Place. After your early rise, try your hand at baking some Anzac biscuits or head to your local bar for a fun game of two up. Whether you feel like getting in amongst the action or you prefer to pay your respects at home, there’s something for you to get up to this Anzac day.

Boxing Day

Celebrate Boxing Day with a trip out this year, the couch will still be there when you get home, don’t worry! Haul up to a viewing point in Manly, Balgowlah Heights, Blues Point or the city centre and watch the start of the iconic Sydney to Hobart race! Bring a picnic and some field games for a leisurely day out in the summer sun. This is such an awesome thing to do with the family or with friends, perfect for getting out for a while after all the indulgences of Christmas.

New Year’s Eve

The last night of the year is a cause for celebration! Sydney is very lucky when it comes to New Year’s Eve, with one of the world’s most famous fireworks displays on offer it’s pretty hard to go wrong with a little outdoors picnicking at your local viewing point. If you’re after something slightly more glamorous, consider booking yourself a spot on another harbour cruise – you’ll enjoy front row seats to the fireworks, catering and beverages all whilst floating out on the harbour.
