How to Build a Budget Hollywood Mirror in 3 Steps

June 9, 2020

Every girl who likes to have their makeup on fleek knows what I’m talking about – keeping a beauty routine space clean and elegant can take a lot of time and energy. The beauty industry keeps offering new ideas everyday to balance those two factors but, let’s face it, most of them are incredibly expensive.

Mirrors have always been, over the years, one of the major elements for every type of beauty routine. They need to be big enough to cover-up hidden angles and well lighted to improve your blush and bronzer skills. Vanity mirrors have turned out to be a tremendous trend this year, but even the more affordable options can be a little bit pricey for the regular girl’s pocket.

But I know everything must be in the right place just before you leave your home so don’t worry! If you’re thinking about purchasing a Hollywood-style vanity, check out these ideas before you make a decision, as I’m going to teach you how to build one yourself, in a super budget-friendly way.

Step One: The Mirror

Here, there are two things to take into consideration: Size and Material.

I’m not kidding around when I say that size is important (Sorry boys!) The bigger the mirror, the fewer are your concerns. A mirror must be large enough so you could deal with the proper angle for your makeup or beauty routine without having to put yourself in crazy awkward positions. The size will always depend on where you want to hang it, but the best part is that most Hollywood vanities come in a diverse range of sizes and shapes.

Of course, if you want to occupy an entire wall it can be a little bit more pricey, but that there are other elegant options that can be way cheaper. Floor models can be a good solution for that matter, as they’re easier to move and end up being a more affordable option. If you want something to practice your detailing, try the studio versions – they are a bit smaller than the classic Hollywood sizes, but it will easily get the job done.

The shape will depend on your personal taste. You may consider square and rectangular since they are suitable and easier to decorate with every type of light bulb or lamps. Usually, more custom shapes, like ovals, come a bit costlier, so actually a squared one might be your most thoughtful decision.

When it comes to material, you have two options: acrylic or glass. The glass is impeccable for creating a frameless and realistic reflection, but it’s quite dangerous to move around when needed, as well as being usually pricier. With the proper acrylic, you’ll get your needs perfectly satisfied and your pocket won’t suffer as much.

Step Two: Lights

If there is one thing I know about beauty routines, it’s the importance of having the proper lighting. Even though your personal taste should have a lot of saying in your final decision, when it comes to lighting, the best and most affordable option is to go with LEDs. Not only have they proved to be the most economic, environment-friendly and resourceful lighting tool, but you also have the choice to buy them as a frame, or as individual bulbs. In my opinion, bulbs will give your Hollywood mirror a classic-vintage look, one that will make you feel like a total movie star! You have the possibility to choose the color that’s suitable for your skin tone as well as the environment mood you want to give your bathroom or room. I suggest going with a neutral warm-white lighted color, perfect for recreating the natural sunlight exposure. Make sure you place them above or at the sides of your mirror (light from below is not only uncomfortable, but it will make your face look overly shadowy.

Step Three: Framing

By choosing bulbs, you are already framing your Holywood mirror, but if you consider other types of lighting, you can additionally decorate it with a wood frame, giving a rustic vintage vibe to your bathroom. A matte finish won’t reflect much light but, on the other side, if you go for a satin finish, for an affordable price it will look stunning on natural wood. You can also decorate your Hollywood mirror with little space cabinets for your makeup. There are several beautiful options you can purchase at any hardware store that will go just right with your bathroom decor and remember that makeup organizers are a great way to keep your makeup on display!

However, if this is just too much work for you, there are numerous affordable ideas you can go for if you don’t really have the time to think about building a Hollywood mirror yourself, as I’ve mentioned in the introduction.

In a Nutshell

A mirror can totally be a lifesaver and whoever came up with the phrase that diamonds are a girl’s best friend never owned a Hollywood mirror. Besides putting your makeup and beauty routines on fleek, it can greatly improve your bathroom or bedroom design. At the end of the day, it’s a useful and elegant solution to your personal looks and decor, and, as you can see, it’s cheaper and more rewarding to build one yourself than to purchase an already made one. Even though I know it takes up some time and effort to pick up the most sustainable and affordable materials. Lastly, a mirror is meant to last a lifetime, so don’t forget to always check out the quality and endurance of every material you choose, and remember that beauty is subjective, so make sure you always create your own personal beauty! Thanks for reading and have a great day.
