Art Deco and Art Nouveau

This year diamonds are getting an old-world style makeover with trends leaning towards art deco and art nouveau– imagine classic opulence with a modern twist. Art deco designs have bold lines and shapes with an emphasis on geometric detailing. Art nouveau still uses the bold lines but incorporated curved and floral settings. It seems like all the celebrities have embraced this, everyone from Kate Moss, Jessica Biel, Blake Lively, Miley Cyrus and even the Duchess of Cambridge, have gotten on-board.

Double Halo Setting

The double halo setting is THE setting of the moment. It consists of a central stone surrounded by two rows of smaller diamonds. It is an intricate setting that makes the centre diamond look much bigger and gives added sparkle. The setting works with most cuts but for this year’s look it works best with cushion, round or oval cuts. Natalie Portman has a beautiful example of a double halo setting.

East-West Setting

The East-West setting is a long stone set horizontally across the finger, usually with an oval or marquise cut diamond. It is an unusual setting which draws focus more to the stone than the other features of the ring. It looks best on long slim fingers. Catherine Zeta Jones has a stunning 10-carat marquise diamond in an east-west setting.

Diamond Cuts

Diamond cuts are changing too – this year it is all about three cuts: the oval, the emerald, and the cushion cut. The oval cut is a modern take on the round diamond. It is unusual enough to lift a plain solitaire setting while still looking classic. The emerald cut is a rectangle stone with the corners cropped. It is a vintage cut that teams perfectly with art deco styles and a thin wedding band. The cushion and Asscher cut is radiant due to its large facets. When styled with the double halo and a coloured diamond it is the clear celebrity favourite this season. Some celebrity examples of these diamond cuts are worn by Blake Lively, Beyonce Knowles, Molly Sims

Colored Diamonds

Colored diamonds and mixed stone settings are having a resurgence ever since Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his mother’s engagement ring, an 18 carat, oval cut sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Many people are opting for a large centre sapphire or emerald with diamond halo. See Halle Berry’s one of a kind emerald andyellow gold ring for inspiration. Yellow and pink diamonds also continue to be big this year as people look for ways to meld classic art deco styles with their own individual slant. Kelly Clarkson’s Canary yellow, cushion cut engagement ring is set to be the inspiration for many engagement rings this year.
