7 Required Steps to Write a Movie Analysis Essay

June 3, 2019

Writing a movie analysis essay is not a very simple task and more of it, it is very time-consuming. So we will not waste even 2-3 minutes for introduction and get straight to business.

  1. Define a super-task or super objective. – the director’s idea.
In contrast to the literary idea, the super-task is necessarily formulated in an effective, verbal, invocatory form and correlates with a through action (that is, it has a positive direction – what do you call the viewer). Answers the question why and why exactly I and today I undertake to shoot this material.(Explain why a different wording is required.)
  2. Define end-to-end and counteractions. It is an effective line of the struggle for proof of the super-task.
Counter-action is an active line of struggle against the super-task. Both lines must be continuous until the end of things, be the main characters and be allowed only at the junction. Sometimes characters leading through or counter-action may be absent – but in this case, the author himself leads them (text “from the author”, plastic and sound series, suggested circumstances, higher power, author’s genre – in “Inspector”, etc.).
  3. Define the objects of the struggle – between what and what arose and is growing contradiction, the definition of conflict, collided ideas.
Dramatic conflict arises, develops, and is resolved only in the clash of individual characters. Therefore, having found the main conflicting views, we personalize them, i.e., we determine which of the characters is the carrier of which idea or its variations. So we define the subjects of the struggle.
  4. Define the subjects of the struggle are the characters who carry the conflicting ideas of the work.
The subject of the struggle is the object or principles of life for which the main participants in the conflict are fighting. Those. for which there is a struggle in the conflict of ideas and in the conflict of characters. The character’s most important task is the main “I want” character, what he achieves in the process of struggle, as well as his work on through or counter-action (as a result!).
  5. Elaborate on the director’s genre (internal genre)
The nature of the events taking place and the author’s (director’s) attitude towards them, determining and the audience’s perception of what is happening.
  6. Talk about the atmosphere – the air of the work,
i.e. how the main characters breathe in your stuff. The atmosphere should not go beyond the author’s intention. The atmosphere, like the air, in reality, can be dense and discharged, thundery and sunny, dark, stuffy, fresh, hot, cool, etc. Creating an atmosphere is a purely director-camera task.
  7. Make thorough proofreading.
Even if you manage to deal with the entire list above and make many mistakes, you will fail with your paper. To avoid this unfortunate situation, use online grammar checkers and read your paper aloud to find awkward phrases and too long sentences. Remember, if you can cut something and your paper will not suffer because of it – cut it.

Writing a quality movie analysis remains one of the challenging assignments, though it seems fun from the first site. You have to watch a movie at least two times, preferably three, you should also watch some other works of the same director, at least partly, and works of other directors working in this genre. It is good if you can spare some times and read interviews, critiques, and other related texts to cite in your movie analysis essay. If you don’t have enough time to deal with it at the needed level, sometimes, it is a good option to address a professional academic essay writing service to do it for you. Good luck!
