Hitting the gym is great for your health, but what about your hair and skin? Take note of these 5 tips to keep yourself looking great while you work out!
1. Hair – Up, Up and Away!
Essentially hair is never going to look good in a gym, so the best thing to do is to put it up. Styling before you exercise is utterly pointless. That chic chignon is only going to get bedraggled after ten minutes on the treadmill, so put it up in a firmly fixed bun. Try using some humidity blocker spray, which will both keep your hair in place and will banish frizz, or a leave-in conditioner if you’re washing your hair afterwards. If you have a fringe or bangs, then you really ought to pin this back securely. Working up a sweat with hair hanging in your face will only promote skin irritation and could potentially cause spots. Having your hair up will also keep you cooler while you work out.
2. No Make Up!
Shocking though it may seem as a concept, you will always look better after a workout if you don’t have half of Boots’ make-up counter running down in sweat beads across your face. Everyone at the gym is in the same boat, and those who are wearing make-up are the ones that will look odd. Your pores will get clogged up with foundation if you leave it on and ultimately you’ll find yourself in a vicious cycle of putting make-up on, working out and applying more make-up afterwards to cover those unsightly spots. You can always cheat with a little mascara though. There’s no need to go too stripped back!
3. Hydration
We’re talking a big bottle of water, as keeping hydrated is vital whilst working out. We’ve talked a lot about perspiration already, and that water has to come from somewhere. If you don’t keep sipping water throughout your workout your skin will look sallow and dried out afterwards. Your skin will also need rehydrating after your shower so apply moisturiser to face and body (at least when you get home, if you don’t have time straight after showering).
4. Loose Clothing
It’s tempting to wear sexy workout gear, especially if you’re surrounded by seasoned gym-goers and gym bunnies. Looser clothing is far better though, as you don’t have perspiration-soaked leggings rubbing against your skin. Check out materials that are breathable and have anti-bacterial qualities. It’s still good, however, to have a shower straight after a workout to help cool down, so don’t use this as an excuse!
5. Save Time
After your workout you may be on your way to work or out on the town. Make sure you’re ahead of the game by packing an essential after-gym kit. This could include dry shampoo if you don’t have time to wash, dry and style your hair. Pack face wipes to clear your skin of sweat. Tinted moisturiser is kinder to skin than piling on heavy foundation. Eyelash curlers and mascara will achieve the same effect as false eyelashes without getting your fingers glued together.
