The Best Worst Oscar Dresses

January 11, 2013

In the run up to this year’s Academy Awards on 24th February, actresses the world over find themselves in a fashion frenzy to pinpoint the right shoes, the perfect hairstyle and of course, that ultimate Oscar-worthy dress. However, every year there are always some that simply miss the style mark. By a long way. Here’s our favourite of the best worst Oscar dresses.

Cher, 1986

Whoever was sat behind Cher at the 1986 Oscars likely complained to the manager and demanded a refund. This Cleopatra-esque outfit certainly catches the eye but for all the wrong reasons – and the ‘80s are not an excuse.

Whoopi Goldberg, 1993

This was the year the Academy played a prank on Whoopi Goldberg, telling her that the awards were being hosted in outer space. Or at least we hope that’s what happened.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 2002

Everyone loves when the beautiful people get it wrong, and the normally impeccably dressed Gwyneth gets it so wrong here. The sheerness and the ruching of the top are already questionable separately, but when combined, they do a great job of making a flawless figure look bad.

Hilary Swank, 2003

On first glance, this one isn’t so offensive. However, look closer and you’ll soon realise that this dress is a crime masquerading in pink dip-dyed tulle – a material that should only be used in the kind of prom dresses that you’ll later try to burn all photo evidence of.

At the time, this swan dress caused a storm for being more on the ugly duckling side of quirky. However, the days of Lady Gaga, meat dresses and Kermit the Frog hats seem to have softened the blow and now, well, we almost quite like it. Don’t tell anyone.
