Although most women love shopping, this does not mean that it is always easy for women to find flattering clothes. Unfortunately, even though women come in all shapes and sizes, many clothing designers and manufacturers only create their clothes for one type of body, which can make it extremely difficult to find clothes that properly, fit your own unique body. However, with the right information and some patience during your next shopping trip, you should be able to leave with some new clothes that not only look great, but look great on your specific body.

Determining Your Body Type

Before you can buy flattering clothes, you need to know what kind of body you have. Although your body is unique and slightly different from every other woman’s body, it will fall into one of four general categories. Once you figure out which category you fall into, you will be able to start learning about what kind of clothes flatter your specific body type (and which pieces of clothing you should avoid purchasing).

  1. Apple Shaped: Women with an apple shaped body have an upper body that is significantly larger than the lower portion of their body. When women women with an apple shaped body gain weight, it can be seen most prominently around their waist.
  2. Hourglass Shaped: Women with an hourglass shaped body have curves on their upper body and lower body, but they still have a noticeable waistline. When women with an hourglass shaped body gain weight, it is added to their existing upper and lower body curves.

Because women with pear shaped bodies have a larger lower body, clothes that flatter should take attention off of the lower body and focus it on the the upper body. Flattering clothes for a pear shaped body include light colored tops, fitted tops with wide straps, flared or a-line skirts, dark washed jeans and shoes with thin heels.

Unflattering clothes for pear shaped bodies include tight skirts, light colour pants, tapered jeans and large belts.

Because women with rectangle shaped bodies are naturally balanced, clothes that flatter should create some curves without disrupting the natural balance of the body. Flattering clothes for a rectangle shaped body include bras with extra padding, tops with thin straps, cinched waist jackets, low rise jeans with back pocket flaps and skirts with a dropped waist.

Unflattering clothes for rectangle shaped bodies include any tops or bottoms with vertical patterns, cropped jackets, jeans with a straight cut and bottoms that have a high waist.
